The newborn baby was saved from a storm drain after it was discovered alive with its umbilical dangerously wrapped around its neck.

A woman, identified only as Geeta, 45, came to the rescue and pulled him out by his feet then cleaned him with a bowl of water.

According to Geeta, a milkman told her that he heard a cry and thought it was a crying kitten but was shocked to discovered it was newborn baby.

The baby was brought at the Egmore Hospital in the Valasaravakkam municipality in the Chennai District of Tamil Nadu state and was treated for breathing problems and has recovered from the incident and is healthy.

Meanwhile, Geeta wants to name the boy Suthanthiram which means freedom, as he was found on India’s Independence Day.

She said, “I reacted immediately, it was spontaneous. As a dozen or so residents and bystanders looked on, I peeped through the drain, an iron pipe around one foot in diameter, and saw the child inside.

‘It was painful to see a child dumped like that. It appeared that the person who abandoned the boy had deliberately pushed him deep enough inside the drain so he would be out of sight. I don’t think there was any feeling for the child, because the umbilical cord seemed to be tied around the neck so it would slowly kill him.”

On the other hand, the hospital received dozens of requests asking to adopt the baby after the video of his rescue went viral but the hospital official said the baby will remain under observation before being transferred to a local orphanage.

Police are now investigating the incident and hopefully they can find and arrest the culprit.
