Tim Clerke discovered the strange little hairy tailed critters at his mum’s house in Auckland, New Zealand.
His mum was horrified and described it as “something out of a horror movie”, have small round bodies with long thin tails and squirming around.
Tim Clerke spotted the creatures at his mum’s house and appealed to his Facebook friends to try and identify them, stating:
“My mother found these on the kitchen floor this morning. One is still alive. Anyone know what they are? Nikki is horrified and will have nightmares for weeks.”
One person noted,”[It’s] like someone cut the bottom end off of baby mice.”
“That is like a horror movie,” a second wrote.
Another friend said: ‘I’d like to believe it was a hoax, then I could sleep better.’ other guesses included ‘deformed baby mice’ or ‘miniature bats’.
Watch the video
Specialists were mystified by the specimens and even the Biosecurity New Zealand entomology team who watch the video suggested “that something [possibly a cat] had just recently eaten the body of the moth, which may explain why a few of the legs were still twitching.”
But, experts from the University of Auckland had an entirely different theory and said the video was a hoax.
On the other hand, insect expert Eric Edwards of Science Advisor and Entomologist with the New Zealand Department of Conservation, believes the unknown specimens could be hoverfly larvae – commonly known as rat-tailed maggots.
